Starting about 0800 there is the on again/off again back up beeping associated with construction equipment. There is construction among the houses along the street behind the hotel (Stratford Court). Barbara on the front desk and Benito especially. We did not utilize the pool or dining facilities All staff encountered was friendly and helpful. From the room we had a nice ocean view, and it was only a short walk down 6th street to access the bluffs and the Sea Cliff Coastal Trail. All room equipment worked well and had no issues. The bathroom vanity had sufficient room for toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, hairbrush, and the provided amenities. The water heated quickly and had great pressure. The large shower, no tub, had a rain head and a hand wand. The only thing was the room was not equipped with an in room safe. There were plenty of electrical outlets and there were also USB plugs next to the bed, which is convenient. This room was very large, with coffee maker, working refrigerator, an ante type room which had a large closet, and a large bathroom. Arrived about 1330 and checked in and were warmly greeted and assigned room 209. Check in time states 1600, but I received an email at 0830 saying my room was ready. Our room was in the main building and not the annex. It was on the 2nd floor and only abutted one other room, so it was a relatively quiet stay. I reserved a 2 Queen Standard and upon arrival found I had been upgraded to a 2 Queen Standard Ocean View. It has a more of a 60's coastal motel feel, like a renovated low-end property, however it has been well cared for and made for an enjoyable stay. This is not what you think of when you think hotel. I was at the point of using or losing a free IHG anniversary night and decided to have a close-by staycation in Del Mar. There are good restaurants nearby as is a Von's grocery store. This hotel is less than half an hour from both the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Safari Park, so it’s a perfect location to stay if you plan to visit both parks. Walking out from the hotel grounds just two blocks away is an access point for Sea Cliff Coastal Trail, a bluff top walking path. The hotel has a guest laundry with coin operated washers and dryers, which is very useful for longer stays. There is also a separate console containing a small cube refrigerator and a Keurig coffee maker on a pull out tray. The bathroom sink console had enough counter space and had additional space down below it to stash more things. There is plenty of space to put your stuff away and plenty of charging outlets, both on the night table and in a shelf within the large dresser. The room itself is extremely well designed. Nearby was a convenient large trash can so clean up from our picnics was easy. We got takeout and ate here several nights. In front of our room was a courtyard patio with picnic tables. There is a ceiling fan, and the large, west facing windows keep the room bright and cheerful during the day. It was very quiet even though we kept the windows open. Lovely well managed property! We stayed in the North Building, in room 507, a large double room with a shared balcony and a faraway peek at the ocean. The artist was steadfast in her commitment to the discipline of drawing, which she adopted early in her career. ![]() O’Keeffe’s drawing practice was the lens for each new experience and her sketches form a journal of her explorations. Our intent with this exhibition is not to eliminate the mystery of her artwork, but rather to deepen the appreciation of her skill and unique talents as one of the most technically proficient and artistically innovative artists of the twentieth century. Her confidence in handling these elements makes her style of painting look effortless. O’Keeffe’s facility with a variety of media-pastel, charcoal, watercolor, and oil-combined with her sense for line, color, and composition to produce deceptively simple works. Time and time again in her work, we see an artist pushing the boundaries, in some cases quite literally with lines and forms racing off the edge of the canvas, yet somehow she always manages to maintain a sense of stability and produce works that are visually engaging. Holding all of this together in harmonious balance is her sense for composition. A brilliant colorist, O’Keeffe created strong, vibrant works with colors that glow with energy and vitality. The presentation offers fresh insight into the importance of line in her work-from preliminary sketches and drawings, to the fluid, seemingly effortless outlines that define regions of her canvas and divide her compositions into dynamic zones of color, be it the curve of a flower petal, the horizon of a landscape, or the contour of an abstract form. To understand the richness of Georgia O’Keeffe’s artistic practice, this exhibition reveals her disciplined drawing practice, dramatic color palette, and innovative sense for composition through paintings and drawings that span her career. The power of Georgia O’Keeffe’s artwork derives from her mastery of essential elements of art making: line, color, and composition. ![]() Filius Flitwick was in the same situation at the time of his Sorting, but in his case the Hat decided on Ravenclaw instead of Gryffindor. Hermione Granger was also considered for Ravenclaw due to her intelligence, but the hat ultimately decided on Gryffindor once again. Minerva McGonagall was a Hatstall, having approximately equal Ravenclaw and Gryffindor traits the Sorting Hat finally sorted her into Gryffindor. Examples of such individuals included Gilderoy Lockhart and Cho Chang, both of whom sought to use the good name and renown of their house, the inherent expectations of certain academic prowess that came with being sorted into it as well as the often somewhat natural ability of its members to gain popularity among their peers, which particularly was the case of the former, proving true the fact that a good student did not necessarily make a good witch or wizard. Įven so, not all Ravenclaws were motivated by academic prowess. Garrick Ollivander, for example, possessed an eidetic memory and can remember every wand he has sold, and Gilderoy Lockhart had an exceptional talent in the Memory Charm. In addition, Ravenclaw students tended to have abilities regarding Memory. Ravenclaws were known to be logical and rational. Ravenclaws tended to be curious about the world and paid attention to the world around them. Garrick Ollivander, a well-known wand seller ( The best, according to some of his students). Another example would be Professor Filius Flitwick, a half-goblin who might have faced scorn for his short stature earlier in life but went on to become a renowned Duelling Champion, and subsequently one of the finest and most knowledgable Charms Masters in the entirety of the wizarding world during his employment at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Luna Lovegood, for example, was one such student: eccentric to put it at its mildest, she was a Ravenclaw student who initially was bullied for her open defiance of conventionality, but ultimately became a celebrated wizarding naturalist and renowned for her participation in the legendary Battle of Hogwarts and past membership in Dumbledore's Army. Some of these eventually also ended up being not only accepted but even celebrated, in spite of being initially subjected to scorn for their various oddities. Often hard-working and diligent, as often was the case with intellectuals with a predisposition for academics, some of the pupils sorted under the blue-bronzed eagle were known to be inclined to dismiss certain social expectations for the sake of satisfying their own intellectual curiosity. Hermione Granger, an extremely intelligent witch and the top student in her year, was sorted into Gryffindor, though she admitted that the Sorting Hat had seriously considered placing her in Ravenclaw. It was not unusual to find Ravenclaw students practising especially different types of magic that other houses might shun. They also prided themselves on being original in their ideas, and methods. Thus, many Ravenclaws tended to be academically motivated and talented students. Ravenclaw House prized learning, wisdom, wit, and intellect in its members. It isn’t just that he fails to lead our allies, is that the United States now regularly sells out our allies under his leadership. I mean, he and I have a very different foreign policy. He hasn’t lifted a finger on behalf of the Hong Kongers. I mean, the way he ignores that the Uighurs are in literal concentration camps in Xinjiang right now. And I’m not at all apologetic for having fought for my values against his in places where I think his are deficient, not just for a Republican, but for an American. So, for example, one of the places where he’s changed, as we were just mentioned to the last questioner, is I think he’s nominated truly great judges, and I worked with him on that. Or maybe a better way to put it is, where the president has now adopted traditionally Republican positions that he used to reject for the majority of his life when he was funding Democratic candidates. But Donald Trump is our president now, so I’ve worked hard to develop a good relationship with him, he’s got a hard job, and we’re called to pray for our leaders, so that’s what we do regularly at the breakfast table at our house, is we pray for the president, and the First Lady, and for Vice President Pence in their callings.Īnd there are obviously a number of issue areas where president trump and I have policy alignment now. I think we should distinguish between policy agreement and policy disagreement, and then also, long term political implications as well. And I guess, I kind of think about it like this. Why do you have to criticize him so much? He tends to occupy spaces of which the potential isn’t immediately obvious, until about 10 seconds later when he gets the ball and you suddenly realise he’s in the absolute perfect spot. This was a familiar performance of the latter Messi era, featuring an awful lot of walking, the odd flash of brilliance and a huge amount of roaming wherever he fancied. It was as if the crowd had come to see Messi do something extraordinary, and everything else was a letdown. Towards the end of the game Messi and Neymar stood over a free kick about 25 yards out Messi ran over the ball, leaving the Brazilian to take it, but there was an audible sigh of disappointment from the whole crowd in the second or so between Messi’s dummy and Neymar striking the ball. While there wasn’t a huge fanfare or massive celebration of his achievements from the fans, it was still impossible to miss the heightened anticipation whenever he got the ball, the sound of 47,000 people sitting up just a little straighter in their seats. In front of a packed crowd - only the away section showed noticeably empty seats - there was no celebration of Messi’s achievement before the game. Who knows, really? What we do know is that Messi is carrying on, and his post-world champion era started with a chilly Wednesday evening fixture in Ligue 1 against Angers in Paris. Or will these be his freebie years, a time he can enjoy and just play - football for football’s sake? So much of the narrative around football at the very top level is geared around achievement, but what about just playing the game, with only a vague sense of striving for something, just for fun, for the pleasure of it, because you can? Is everything going to be a letdown now? Is motivation going to be a problem? What is there left to achieve? Will he be left with a constant, nagging sense that he should have just retired on the spot in the Lusail Stadium, the trophy still in his hands, the bisht only just shrugged from his shoulders, the greatest footballing mic drop of all time? It’s one of the earliest examples of fashion branding. The famous LV monogram was first used in 1896 as part of an initiative by Georges to prevent counterfeiting of his coveted new line of travel trunks. The Louis Vuitton brand embodies all the attributes of luxury, from the craftsmanship, exclusivity and relevance to heritage. The largest travel-goods store in the world at the time, it became the company’s flagship. In 1914, a Louis Vuitton store opened at 70 Champs-Élysées. When Louis Vuitton died in 1892, control of the luxury house was passed onto his only son, Georges Vuitton. Travel’s popularity broadened in the late 19th century, and Vuitton’s trunks could easily be packed into train cars and ships - upright trunks meant hanging wardrobe storage that would allow his clients to transport their sophisticated garments without worry. In 1858, Vuitton debuted his lightweight, handcrafted canvas trunks, which were sturdy, rugged and equipped with convenient compartments. The most common trunks of the era were round, which weren’t ideal for toting and storing. Long before his brand would become known globally for its exemplary top-handle bags and stylish totes, Vuitton produced stackable and rectangular trunks. The craftsman opened a humble workshop on rue Neuve des Capucines and advertised his services with a small poster that read: “Securely packs the most fragile objects. In 1854, Vuitton launched his namesake company. He toiled as a box maker and packer for more than a decade and built relationships with royals and members of the upper class while working for the empress of France, Eugenie de Montijo. When he arrived in Paris, Vuitton made a living with his hands. With stops along the way to make money so that he could forge ahead, the journey took a couple of years, but reward was close at hand. The young Vuitton was 13 at the time and would need to travel on foot to get to the capital, which was hundreds of miles away. The company’s modest origins can be traced back to when its founder, Louis Vuitton (1821–92), wishing to free himself from the conventional lifestyle in his provincial French city of Anchay as well as a difficult stepmother, left in the early 1830s to make a new life in Paris.
